Upscaling of Geocellular Models for Reservoir Flow Simulation: A Review of Recent Progress

چکیده

A variety of approaches for the upscaling of detailed geocellular models for flow simulation are reviewed. Local, extended local, global and quasi global techniques for the calculation of equivalent permeability and transmissibility are discussed. Specialized procedures for permeability upscaling in the vicinity of wells are also described. Flow-based grid generation techniques, in which a curvilinear grid is introduced to resolve the effects of permeability connectivity, are described along with procedures for computing upscaled properties for such grids. Coarse scale simulation results generated using many of these upscaling techniques are presented. These results illustrate the capabilities of existing upscaling procedures and demonstrate the levels of accuracy attainable using the various approaches.

SPE 124477 Intelligent Upscaling of Static and Dynamic Reservoir Properties

Rock typing is an essential part of building geological model for an asset. Millions of dollars are invested in logs, core measurements, SCAL studies and geological interpretation that result in definition of different rock types. In most caes rock types that are identified in a reservoir do not have crisp boundaries and display overlapping characteristics. During the upscaling process, multipl...

Permeability upscaling in fractured reservoirs using different optimized mother wavelets at each level

We use a multi-resolution analysis based on a wavelet transform to upscale a 3D fractured reservoir. This paper describes a 3D, single-phase, and black-oil geological model (GM) that is used to simulate naturally-fractured reservoirs. The absolute permeability and porosity of GM is upscaled by all the possible combinations of Haar, Bior1.3, and Db4 wavelets in three levels of coarsening. The ap...

Single-phase Near-well Permeability Upscaling and Productivity Index Calculation Methods

Reservoir models with many grid blocks suffer from long run time; it is hence important to deliberate a method to remedy this drawback. Usual upscaling methods are proved to fail to reproduce fine grid model behaviors in coarse grid models in well proximity. This is attributed to rapid pressure changes in the near-well region. Standard permeability upscaling methods are limited to systems with ...

SPE 118993 A Multiscale Mixed Finite-Element Solver for Three-Phase Black-Oil Flow

Previous research has shown that multiscale methods are robust and capable of providing more accurate solutions than traditional upscaling methods. Multiscale methods solve the pressure equation on a coarse grid, but capture the effects from fine-scale heterogeneities through basis functions computed numerically from local single-phase problems on the underlying geocellular grid. Published resu...

Toward reservoir simulation on geological grid models

We present a reservoir simulation scheme that gives accurate resolution of both large-scale and fine-scale flow patterns. The method uses a mixed multiscale finite-element method (MMsFEM) to solve the pressure equation on a coarse grid and a streamline-based technique to solve the fluid transport on a fine-scale subgrid. Through this combination, we aim towards a numerical scheme that facilitat...
